Hyde family papers, 1713-1916.

Diaries kept by Lt. William Hides (1690-1754; also found as William Hydes, William Hyde), with later entries attributed to his son, Noah Hyde (1717-1786) and Noah's daughter Ruth Hyde (1740-1816), recording deaths in the town and other vital records, lists of fires, details of William Hides's military service in Canada (1707-1709), sermon notes, and Hide/Hides/Hyde family records; and photograph album of George Hyde (1810-1892) and his wife, Rebecca (Childs) Hyde, with photos of George and Rebecca Hyde, their daughters, Alzea (Hyde) Whitman and Charlotte (Hyde) Horsfall, and other family members and friends, including some members of the first graduating class of Newton High School. Also includes reminiscences, historical lectures, speeches, and other materials, of James Francis Clark Hyde (1825-1898, known as J.F.C. Hyde), businessman, politician, Newton's first mayor, civic leader, and railroad executive, including materials on local and political history, agriculture and horticulture, his inaugural addresses (1874, 1875), and a historical memoir written by his daughter Mary E. Hyde (1862-1945); together with correspondence (1854-1897), autograph collection, with signatures of A.J. Downing, William Lloyd Garrison, and others, account book with lists of plants sold from his nursery (1845-1853), photographs, and household receipts, chiefly relating to the construction and furnishing of his house on Centre Street built in 1874.
